What is actually confirmed about spirits
The official description gives spirits a strange kind of fame: they are named, but only at the category level. “After dark, vermin, spirits and all manner of beasts shall assail thy Collection” — that line confirms spirits exist as a class of night threat without documenting any individual type. On this wiki’s fact scale that makes spirits official as a category and unverified as a roster, which is exactly the line this page walks.
The achievement list (verified September 13, 2026) has since hardened the picture: Exorcise a ghost (46.4% of players), Banish a ghost to the nether realm (37.7%) and — the standout — Exorcise the Dread Abbot (23.2%), a named ghostly boss. The creature players actually meet in footage is the ghost — a drifting, translucent visitor that early streams show appearing from later nights onward, and the two exorcism achievements confirm two distinct interactions with it.
How do you fight something that isn’t solid?
This is why the official description gives you three tools instead of one. The dagger handles everything with a body (the rat guide, the spider guide); the holy cross is what early footage reaches for when ghosts drift in — the incorporeal answer in the abbey’s toolkit. The crossbow covers distance, which matters in aisles where you can see the problem but not reach it.
The practical night-loadout pattern that emerges from long plays: dagger on the belt for vermin, cross ready for what glows. The night defense guide breaks down all three tools in detail.
What early footage shows about ghost behavior
Three observations, all from streams rather than official text — treat each as reported, not confirmed:
- Late arrivals: ghosts show up in later-night sessions more than early ones, suggesting the game escalates its supernatural roster as days pass.
- Shared hauntings in co-op: one four-player session showed a ghost appearing to both monks at once — whatever spawns is on the abbey’s clock, not any player’s screen.
- Repel — or banish: the two exorcism achievements (Exorcise a ghost, then Banish a ghost to the nether realm) suggest a two-stage answer: drive the restless spirit off, then banish it for good. Whether “banishing” needs a stronger cross, a perk, or a specific night is unverified.
- A ghost with a name: the Dread Abbot sits at 23.2% — a third of players have met the abbey’s own former head haunting its stacks. This is the closest thing Monk Took Book has to a confirmed boss fight.
None of these have official text behind them. When the community’s accumulated testing (or a patch note) pins any of them down, this page updates the same day.
The honest gaps
The bestiary work in our enemies guide tracks the whole picture, but the spirit-specific unknowns worth naming: how many spirit types exist beyond the ghost, what the Dread Abbot’s fight actually involves, and whether any book or shelf state attracts them. In a game about protecting a collection from all manner of beasts, the spirit file is the one most still open.
If the spooky half isn’t for you
The same official lever that tames rats works here: granular difficulty options can reduce or disable some or all enemies, spirits included, without touching the shelving-and-memory loop. And if it is very much for you — the night orders guide covers how to keep serving Scribe requests while the cross is in your off hand.
