About the Game

Run a medieval monastery library by day — sorting symbol-marked books into a filing system you invent yourself — and defend it by night, when vermin, spirits and all manner of beasts come for the collection. Every page on this site carries a verified-on date.

Pro Tip:  Decide your memory zones before the first bell — re-shelving is twice as fast when every symbol has a home.

The Day Shift

Sort, Stack, Remember

Books arrive at the dock with no titles — only a symbol on the cover. Where they go is entirely up to you, and at night, the abbey will test how well you remember your own system.

1

Read the cover

Every book is marked with a symbol — diamond, crescent, star. That mark is all you get.

2

Invent your filing system

Shelve by symbol, by color, by shelf zone — whatever your memory can hold. The game never tells you where a book "belongs".

3

Ring the belfry bell

When the bell sounds, scribes arrive with requests. Fetch each book before sunrise — a swift, tidy shift earns the Abbot's Blessings.

Defend the Collection

When the candles gutter, the abbey wakes up. Vermin chew the spines, spirits drift the stacks — and damaged books cost you Blessings. Our bestiary covers every threat, and every tool that answers it.

Blessings, Perks & New Chambers

Good work is rewarded with Blessings — the Abbot's favor. Spend them on Perks to level thy Strength, Speed and Carpentry, or reinvest them in the Collection itself: loftier shelves and whole new chambers to unlock.

✦

Earn them honestly

Finished a scribe's request early? Kept the books pristine? The favor stacks up shift by shift.

✦

Pray, then specialize

Carpentry raises taller shelves, Strength carries taller stacks, Speed beats the sunrise. Repair skill keeps damaged books alive — quill work included.

✦

Grow the abbey

New shelves, new chambers, new problems. The collection — and the night — only gets bigger.

Two currencies, two rules: coin buys tools at the courtyard shop — Blessings buy the abbey itself.

Asked Before You Ask

Is Monk Took Book actually scary?
It's "cozy-creepy" — tense after dark, never horror. And it's fully in your hands: enemy difficulty can be reduced, increased or switched off entirely for pure organizing.
Can I play it like a pure organizing game?
Yes. Granular difficulty options let you disable enemies, tune the book arrival rate and play at your own pace — a surprising number of monks do exactly that.
How does co-op work?
Online co-op for up to 4 monks with public or private lobbies, join codes and proximity voice chat. Difficulty scales with party size — four pairs of hands, four times the chaos.
Is there a free demo?
It was — until October 29, 2026, when the demo was retired after eight months. Steam's refund window (under two hours) is now the way to try the abbey before buying. Demo status →
What languages and platforms?
Steam PC only for now, English with full audio. No console or localized versions announced as of September 2026.
