Monk Took Book Rat Guide: The Book-Eating Vermin

FAQ

Is the rat a confirmed enemy in Monk Took Book?
Yes — the strongest confirmation on the site. The official Steam achievement list includes Kill a rat, and the achievement text describes the rat as intent on consuming the collection.
What do rats do to your books?
They target the collection itself. Gameplay footage shows the message that a rat has nibbled on a book — damaged pages become repair bills at dawn.
How do you kill a rat?
Early gameplay shows the dagger doing the job — one streamer dispatched a rat in a burst of fire with it. Whether the crossbow or holy cross work better in which situations is still being verified.
Can you play without rats?
Yes. The official difficulty options can reduce or disable enemies entirely, and an arachnophobia mode exists for spiders — rat-free runs are an official way to play.

Is the rat confirmed?

The rat is the most solidly documented enemy on this wiki. The official Steam achievement list includes Kill a rat, and the achievement text describes the rat as “intent on consuming the collection” — the game’s own words, not community rumor. That makes the rat one of only two enemies (with the spider) that can be stated as flat fact rather than report.

Everything below that comes from early gameplay footage and is marked as observed — numbers and spawn behavior land here after proper testing, not before.

What does the rat actually do?

Observed behavior from early streams: rats appear after dark and go for the books rather than the monk. The damage message — “a rat has nibbled on the book” — is the sound of tomorrow’s repair bill. The practical takeaway every early player repeats: a rat seen is a rat to kill now. The nibbling starts immediately, and every second it spends on a shelf is pages you pay to restore with the quill at sunrise.

How do you fight it?

The dagger is the workhorse answer — early footage even shows a rat dispatched in a burst of fire with it. The full toolkit the official description gives you is a dagger, a crossbow and a holy cross, and which tool wins against which creature is exactly what our night defense guide tracks as footage accumulates.

What is not yet verified: how often rats spawn, which shelves they favor, and whether their targeting follows some logic (weakest shelving? nearest stack?). The moment testing pins any of that down, it lands here.

What does rat damage cost you?

The quill is the official repair tool — damaged books come out of the night nibbled or worse, and streams show them being repaired for a money payment described as pleasantly cheap in the early game. The deeper answer lives in our night defense guide and the repair section of the enemies guide, but the short version: rat damage is a tax on slow reactions, not a run-ender.

Can you avoid rats entirely?

Officially, yes — the granular difficulty options can reduce or disable some or all enemies, documented in our difficulty settings guide. Two caveats for completionists: the Kill a rat and Kill a spider achievements presumably need enemies on, and the abbey loses half its “cozy-creepy” character when the night goes quiet. Most players we have watched start calm and turn the vermin back on once their filing system holds.
